Very excited to share our collaboration project, the Camina x Amoise red!
Camina, a steady favourite and iconic restaurant in Whangamatā, has long held a soft spot for me; an open kitchen, food cooked over fire, thoughtfully put together by Barend, and up front, Rowan attentively guiding the room. It’s a place where you always have a memorable experience and an insanely delicious meal.
The full flavours of the dishes at the restaurant are bold and unique, with many visitors driving several hours to partake in the experience time and again. Rowan and Barend wanted to create a wine to match the food at Camina, so after many visits, field trips by the family to the winery and a big blending session, we did just that - with the Camina Syrah Cabernet Franc.
The Syrah is from the undulating hills of the Two Terraces vineyard. The rocky soils contribute fresh red fruits and saline acidity, and this major component is made with 100% whole cluster grapes. The smaller component of Cabernet Franc comes from 26 year old vines in Bridge Pa, which add concentration and the ageing in neutral oak barrels contributes the back bone and tannins on the mid-palate.
Dark plums, cassis, spice, red currants and violets. Juicy, mouth watering with a hint of spice. This is a medium bodied wine that can withstand bold flavours and has a smooth finish.
All grapes are handpicked, organic and made with vineyard derived yeasts that I ferment under the vines. No additions at any stage, the wine is unfiltered and unfined. My rows have been farmed biodynamically since 2020.
